Shining Services cleaner at work in Melbourne

Rug Cleaning Services in Melbourne

If your rug was sold as silk and did not cost thousands, it may well be viscose. Water turns viscose yellow and stiff, and nothing reverses it. We test the fibre on site before anything wet goes near it.

Rug cleaning in Melbourne goes wrong in two ways. The grit deep in the rug turns to paste when it gets wet, and your floorboards get damp underneath. We take the dry soil out first and clean the rug off the floor, or collect it, wash it off site, dry it flat and bring it back.

  • Dry soil removed before any water touches it
  • Fibre tested on site, because viscose cannot get wet
  • Cleaned off your floorboards, not on them

Why does a rug need a different clean from carpet?

Because a rug has two sides and a foundation between them. Dry grit settles down into that foundation, and cleaning from the top alone does not pull it back out.

A proper rug clean starts dry. Both sides are vacuumed thoroughly to bring the grit out, and only then does the pile get cleaned and rinsed.

Wetting a dirty rug straight away does the opposite. Water turns that grit into a paste inside the rug, and moisture underneath sits against your floor.

Fitted carpet is a different job. See carpet cleaning in Melbourne.

What sort of rug do you actually have?

This decides the method, and plenty of owners have never been told.

Wool and handmade

Oriental and Persian rugs, cleaned with pH neutral products. Dyes are tested first, since older natural dyes can bleed.

Synthetic

Polypropylene and nylon machine made rugs. The most forgiving of the three and the quickest to clean.

Viscose and art silk

Also sold as bamboo silk, banana silk or rayon. It is made from wood pulp, and water is what ruins it. Low moisture only.

If a rug was sold to you as silk at a price that seemed reasonable, there is a good chance it is viscose. We test it on site before anything gets near it.

What happens on the day?

Four stages, in your home or off site, and the first one removes most of the soil.

Inspect and test

  • Fibre tested before anything else
  • Dye stability tested
  • Existing damage photographed
  • Fringe and edges checked
  • Realistic result explained

Dry soil out

  • Vacuumed thoroughly on both sides
  • Grit worked out of the foundation
  • Pet hair lifted
  • Delicate fibres handled gently
  • Nothing wet at this stage

Cleaned and rinsed

  • Rug moved off timber floors first
  • Method matched to the fibre
  • Stain and odour treatment
  • Rinsed to keep residue down
  • Fringes cleaned by hand

Drying

  • Water extracted before drying
  • Laid flat, not hung or folded
  • Airflow set up where the room is cold
  • Pile groomed back into line
  • A real drying time given

Fringes are cleaned by hand. A machine can pull them out of the foundation, and reattaching a fringe costs more than the clean did.

What does water do to an art silk rug?

Four outcomes, and none of them can be reversed.

  1. Step 01

    It goes weak

Viscose is made from wood pulp. Wet, it loses much of its strength and behaves closer to paper than to wool.

  2. Step 02

    It yellows

As it dries, a yellow brown cast can wick up to the surface. That colour does not wash out.

  3. Step 03

    It goes stiff

Wet viscose dries coarse and crunchy. The sheen people paid for is gone for good.

  4. Step 04

    It crushes

Someone kneeling on it while wet leaves a permanent flat patch. The damage is mechanical.

Why does this matter in Melbourne homes?

Plenty of Melbourne rugs sit on hard floors, and that changes the risk.

  • Polished boards. Period homes through the inner north and east sit on original timber. A damp rug left on it can cup or mark the floor underneath
  • Apartment hard flooring. CBD, Southbank and Docklands apartments run timber look or tile, with loose rugs doing the softening
  • Cold rooms, slow drying. Drying times vary, and in a Melbourne July a rug takes longer to dry than it does in summer
  • Silk look rugs. Many rugs sold as silk look are viscose, which needs the gentlest treatment of all

The rug can be replaced. An old timber floor is much harder to fix, which is why we keep the wet work off it. For a rug on original boards, an off-site wash keeps the floor dry altogether.

Why can a rug look clean and still be dirty?

Four things worth knowing before you book.

Rug cleaning in Melbourne has to start dry, not wet

A rug has two faces and a foundation between them, and dry grit settles into it over years. We vacuum both sides thoroughly first, so the grit comes out before any water arrives. Wetting it first turns that grit into a paste inside the rug.

Steam is wrong for a viscose rug

Viscose is sold as art silk, bamboo silk, banana silk and rayon. Wet, it loses much of its strength, dries stiff and can yellow, and none of that reverses. We test the fibre on site, and a viscose rug gets a low moisture clean or is left alone.

Your floorboards are why the rug comes off the floor

Moisture trapped under a rug can cup, stain or mark timber, and apartments run timber look or tile that does not like standing water either. We move the rug off the boards before any wet work and set up airflow where the room is cold.

Fringes show how the rest was handled

Fringes are part of the rug foundation rather than a trim sewn on the end. Run a machine over them and they can pull out, and reattaching a fringe costs more than the clean. They get cleaned by hand, which is slower and is the only way that does not damage them.

Anyone can make the top of a rug look better for a fortnight. The question is what came out of the middle of it.

What backs us working on your rug?

Handmade rugs can be worth more than the room. Here is what sits behind the job.

Fibre tested first

On site, before any water goes near it.

Condition photographed

Recorded before we start.

Kept off your floorboards

Wet work never sits on timber.

We say when to leave it

Some rugs are better untouched than cleaned.

What do Melbourne customers say about us?

How much does rug cleaning cost in Melbourne?

Quoted after we see the rug, because size, fibre and construction all change the job.

Send a photo

Front, back and the fringe. Size and rough age if you know them.

A guide price

From the photos, so you know roughly where it will land.

Fibre tested on site

Before we clean, because a photo cannot reliably tell viscose from silk.

Fixed price, then cleaned

Agreed before we start, with anything we cannot fix named upfront.

A machine made synthetic and a hand knotted wool rug of the same size are completely different jobs, so a flat rate would overcharge one of them. If the fibre test changes the method, we tell you the price before we start. Collection and return for an off-site wash is included in the quote.

What gets booked with a rug clean?

Usually done on the same visit.

Pet odour treatment

Worked into the foundation, not just the surface.

What do Melbourne customers ask about rug cleaning?

How much does rug cleaning cost in Melbourne?

It is quoted after we have seen the rug, because size, fibre and construction all change the job. Send photos of the front, back and fringe for a guide price. We test the fibre on site and agree the fixed price before we start.

Do you clean rugs at my home?

Yes. We take the dry soil out first, then move the rug off timber floors before any wet work. Viscose gets a low moisture method or is left alone.

Can you take the rug away to wash it?

Yes. We collect it, photograph its condition, wash it off site, dry it flat and return it. It suits large handmade rugs and rugs on original timber, where no water should go near the floor.

What is wrong with cleaning a rug on my floorboards?

Moisture trapped underneath can cup, stain or mark timber, and a cold Melbourne room slows drying down. That is why the rug comes off the boards before we clean it and stays off until it is dry enough to go back.

How do I know if my rug is viscose?

If it was sold to you as silk at a price that seemed reasonable, there is a good chance it is viscose. It also goes by art silk, bamboo silk and rayon. We test the fibre on site before cleaning rather than guessing, because the answer changes the method.

What happens if a viscose rug gets wet?

It weakens badly, dries stiff and can yellow, and none of that reverses. Kneeling on it while wet leaves a permanent flat patch. That is why viscose gets a low moisture clean or gets left alone, and we will tell you honestly which one applies.

Do you clean the fringes?

Yes, by hand. Fringes are part of the rug foundation rather than a trim sewn on the end, so a machine can pull them out. Reattaching a fringe costs more than the clean, which is why the slow method is the sensible one.

How long does a rug take to dry?

Drying times vary with the fibre, the thickness and the weather, and they run longer in a Melbourne winter. We extract as much water as we can and set up airflow where the room is cold. You get a real time for putting it back on the floor.

Will old stains and pet odour come out?

Often, when the treatment reaches the foundation where the odour sits. Dye damage and bleach marks are permanent, and we point those out before we start.

We stay until it's right

Our cleaners don't leave until you're happy with the work. For end of lease cleans, if you're not satisfied and tell us within 72 hours, we come back and re-clean.
