Rug Cleaning in Darwin

We clean rugs in your home, where they lie, or collect them for an off-site wash, dry and return. Either way we identify the fibre first and say no to the ones water ruins.

Wet cleans are dried with air movers rather than left damp on a slab through the build up. Each rug is quoted in writing after we have seen it.

  • Fibre checked before any water touches it
  • Jute, sisal and viscose handled dry, never wet
  • Cleaned in your home, or collected, washed, dried and returned
  • Air movers on it, not left to the wet season air

Why is rug cleaning different in Darwin?

Because a rug cleaned in your house then has to dry in Darwin air.

We clean on site with the same kind of gear used on fitted carpet. That is fine for a synthetic rug and a normal mess, but a soaked wool rug in February needs more care.

So we tell you which one you have before we start. A rug that needs a full wash, or will not dry safely on the floor, is collected, washed and dried off site, then brought back to you.

What should you know before anyone wets your rug?

Four things that decide whether a wet clean is safe.

Damp rugs can stain for good

A rug that stays damp in warm, humid air can grow mould, and the staining it leaves may not come out. Through the wet season from November to April, Darwin air gives a rug no help drying.

Wet air dries a rug slowly

Slow drying with poor air circulation is what causes brown line staining. Wool makes it worse, because it holds a lot of moisture before it even feels wet.

Mould in the foundation stays

Once mould reaches the inner foundation fibres it is very hard to remove. Left long enough the rug goes stiff and cracks when you bend it.

Heat and alkaline products make dyes run

Even a colourfast dye can bleed if it meets high temperature or high alkalinity. That is what a hire machine and a supermarket product deliver, so a DIY attempt is where many ruined rugs start.

The question is not whether your rug can be cleaned. It is whether it can be dried afterwards, in this house, in this month.

What can and cannot be wet cleaned?

We check the fibre first, and some of these get a firm no.

Wet cleans well

  • Polypropylene and polyester
  • Nylon and synthetic blends
  • Machine made cotton rugs
  • Most modern floor rugs

Wet cleans with care

  • Wool, cool water and pH neutral only
  • Never hot, never alkaline
  • Dyes tested on a hidden corner first
  • Air movers on it straight after

Handled dry, never wet

  • Viscose, also sold as art silk
  • Jute, sisal and seagrass
  • Deep shag that will not dry through
  • Anything with a failing latex backing

Rugs we will not clean

  • Hand knotted silk
  • Antique and heirloom pieces
  • Rugs with active dye bleed

What happens on the day?

Four steps, and the first one can end with us saying no.

  1. Step 01

    Fibre and dye tested

We check what the rug is made of and whether the dyes hold, on a hidden corner, before anything else happens.

  2. Step 02

    Dry soil out first

Both faces vacuumed, and the floor underneath as well, because wetting grit just turns it to mud in the pile.

  3. Step 03

    Cleaned to the fibre

Wet or dry depending on what step one found. Fringes worked by hand, not run over with a machine.

  4. Step 04

    Set up to dry

Air movers over and under, with the rug raised off the floor, and you get a drying time before we leave.

Are carpet beetles eating your wool rug?

They start where you cannot see. Carpet beetle larvae prefer dark, undisturbed places, so the edges and the underside of a rug are more likely to be affected than the open middle.

The larvae feed on wool, silk, felt and fur. Synthetic rugs are not on the menu, but a wool one is a food source, and Darwin's warmth means there is no cold season to slow them down.

Larvae also prefer soiled areas, which is the honest argument for cleaning. Cleaning reduces the problem, but it does not guarantee every egg is gone.

What do Darwin customers say about us?

How do we price a rug clean in Darwin?

Rug cleaning is quoted per rug after an inspection, on size, fibre and condition. There is no rate card.

Size and fibre first

A wool rug takes longer than a synthetic one of the same size, and a dry method is a different job to a wet one. Measure yours including the fringe when you get in touch.

Extras named up front

Pet urine treatment and heavy stain work are separate lines on the quote. You see them before you agree, not on the invoice afterwards.

Stacking saves a visit

Rugs done alongside a carpet or upholstery booking share the travel and setup, so they cost less than a standalone visit.

Do you clean rugs for Darwin businesses?

Yes. Reception and foyer rugs, entry mats, boardroom and hotel pieces, and runners in corridors, across the CBD, the Waterfront and Palmerston.

Commercial rugs sit on hard floors in air conditioned rooms, which is a different problem to a home. Entry mats take the worst of the wet season straight off the footpath, and rubber backing against tile holds water where nobody checks.

We book early-morning cleans from 6am before you open, or evening cleans until 10pm after you close, so the drying happens away from your trading hours.

What do people ask before booking a rug clean?

Do you clean the rug in my home or take it away?

Either. Most rugs are cleaned in your home. A heavily soiled rug, or a wool piece too heavy to dry on the floor in the wet season, is collected, washed and dried off site, then returned, and the quote tells you which one yours needs.

How much does rug cleaning cost in Darwin?

Rug cleaning is quoted per rug after an inspection, because a wool rug and a synthetic one of the same size are different jobs. Booking rugs alongside carpet or upholstery saves a separate visit.

Can my rug be cleaned during the wet season?

Synthetic rugs, yes, any time. A thick wool rug between November and April is the one to think about, because drying is the whole risk. We use air movers and lift the rug off the floor, and a piece too heavy to dry safely in the house goes off site to be washed and dried instead.

Will the colours run?

Not if the dyes are tested first, which is why we do a hidden corner before anything else. Old bleed from a previous attempt usually cannot be undone.

Will my rug shrink?

It can, most often on a rug's first professional clean, when natural fibres in the foundation absorb moisture. Shrinkage is generally permanent, so a rug that has never been cleaned gets that warning before we start.

Can you clean a jute, sisal or viscose rug?

Dry only, never wet. Viscose loses much of its strength when wet and a plain water spill can leave a brown mark, and jute browns and breaks down the same way.

Can you get carpet beetles out of a wool rug?

Cleaning helps and it is the right first step, because larvae feed on the soiled areas and the underside more than the open middle. It will not kill every egg on its own, so a bad infestation needs a pest treatment as well.

Can you get pet urine out?

The smell usually yes, the stain not always. Old urine attacks the dye, so an old accident can leave a permanent mark even after the odour is gone.

We stay until it's right

Our cleaners don't leave until you're happy with the work. For end of lease cleans, if you're not satisfied and tell us within 72 hours, we come back and re-clean.
